Alice’s heart starts pounding when her childhood friend Otto announces his return home after a long journey. Alice has long loved Otto, but a problem arises: a far wealthier and better-dressed rival also spots an opportunity to present herself as a good match. Alas! Poor Alice has neither the wealth nor the clothes to match such a suitress.

The first film adaptation of Heiberg’s classic play about a superstitious mother, Karen, the elf-maiden Agnete and King Christian IV. Two infants are swapped at birth. Noble-born Elisabeth Munk is found on Elverhøjen (Elves’ Hill) and is brought up as Agnete, a peasant girl, whom all the locals believe to be an elf-maiden.

Having grown up in poverty, the ambitious Nana is determined to break out of it. She becomes part of the Paris theatre scene and gets involved with several of the men who court her. However, Nana’s impoverished past catches up with her, and the story comes to a tragic end.
