The Friend from Springfield

Valdemar Andersen, 1927, 85 min
Comedy writer Jonas Lenner takes an impromptu trip to Paris to flee his writer's block and the suffocating monotony of home. He tells his wife that he is going to visit head teacher Mikkelsen, an old – and fictitious – friend in Springfield. But of course she learns the truth yet says nothing. All hell breaks loose shortly after Jonas’ return, when a certain head teacher Mikkelsen suddenly manifests in the flesh on his doorstep.

In 1913, Valdemar Andersen was employed as a screenwriter at Nordisk Films Kompagni, collaborating in particular with director Lau Lauritzen Sr. in making a great deal of comedies. ‘The Friend from Springfield’ is a culmination of all Valdemar Andersen’s previous experience with the genre.

The film contains English subtitles and musical accompaniment by Stephen Horne.
