The Peacemaker

Lau Lauritzen Sr., 1921, 15 min
War has been declared in the aptly named “Villa Pax”. The war-ladies, Mrs. Sørensen and Mrs. Hansen, spearhead the conflict between their floors, and constantly send their henpecked husbands to the front line. The poor men try their best to remain neutral, but a secret fraternity cannot stop any war. Fresh blood is required, so Mrs. Hansen’s son and Mrs. Sørensen’s niece plan a peace conference in the backyard.

The film has Danish intertitles. Note that the film contains language that, while widespread in the silent film period, strikes us as offensive today.

Betzy Kofoed plays the role of Mrs. Hansen. Nordisk Films Kompagni employed Kofoed as an actor from 1913-22 where she appeared in 78 films. She was already in her late fifties when she made her film debut. Her distinctive face and physical presence were ideal for roles as a stern wife and mother-in-law in numerous comedies by Lau Lauritzen Sr.
